Young Song, one of the most sought after cellists in his native Korea, combines perfect technique with a warm sensibility. He has performed to critical acclaim with orchestras and in solo recitals, toured extensively as a chamber musician, and served as a guest principal with numerous renowned orchestras.

 

His recent performances in Japan include the Dvořák Concerto with the New Japan Philharmonic at Suntory hall, Tokyo, TV Asahi’s Daimei-Nonai-ongakukai broadcast with the Janáček Philharmonic, and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with Myung Whun Chung and the APO at both Tokyo’s Suntory hall and in Fukuoka, Toyama. Furthermore, since 2013, he has received numerous invitations for solo recitals throughout Japan.

 

As a recitalist and chamber musician, Young has performed in major music capitals throughout the world, such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Frankfurt Alte Oper, Salle Gaveau, Zürich Tonhalle, Finlandia Hall, Suntory Hall, Opera City, and Wigmore Hall. His collaborations with eminent musicians include Martha Argerich, Yuri Bashmet, Myung Whun Chung, and Arto Noras.

 

Young has participated in prestigious International music festivals in Rhinegau, Mecklenburg, Verbier, Casals, Mateus, Prussia Cove, and Harare. He makes regular appearances at the Naantali festival in Finland, and the Beppu festival in Japan, which is honored by the city of Beppu and the Argerich foundation.

 

As a concerto soloist, he has appeared with the world’s leading Orchestras, such as the English Chamber Orchestra, New York Chamber Orchestra, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Tapiola Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Kanazawa, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Dominican National Orchestra, Yomiuri Tokyo Symphony, Northern Czech Philharmonic, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

 

In 2015, Young had an enthusiastically ambitious performance schedule, which included 5 different recital programs, 9 concertos, and 27 chamber music works. Along with this, he created a concert project titled “Young Song’s Great Performers Series,” which included Jason Vieaux, Cuatrocientos, and Arto Noras. Since 2007, Young has been invited to host a popular radio program on Korean national radio (KBS 1FM) called “Young Song’s Family Music,” and it became a hot topic when cellist Yo-Yo Ma appeared on his show in 2008. He was the host of the “11AM Concert series,” which has become the most popular concert series of the Seoul Arts Center. In addition, Young has put his efforts into social contribution and outreach by serving as the music director of the Happy Music School, a national culture sharing project with SK Telecom, serving students who do not have access to classical music education.

 

Young has released four commercial albums: “Tango (2006)” STOMP/EMI; “Song of Brazil (2007)” STOMP/EMI with guitarist Jason Vieaux; “Rachmaninoff & Shostakovich Cello Sonatas (2009)” STOMP/Warner music with pianist Andrius Ziabys; and “Piazzolla Masterworks (2010)” on the STOMP/Warner music label. His latest album, Brahms cello sonatas with pianist Aviram Reichert, was released in Japan, 2013 on the Octavia label.

 

Young made his debut at age 9 with the Seoul Philharmonic, and received the Seoul Mayor’s Scholarship. This enabled him to continue his studies at The Juilliard School’s pre-college division, graduating with the “Highest Artist Leadership Award,” and then at the Royal Northern College of Music in the U.K, winning first prize in the RNCM Competition as well as the SEM Group Concerto Award. In 2002, he was a prizewinner at the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki, Finland. In 2002, Young was appointed as a Korean Cultural Ambassador to represent Korean classical music artists, and in this capacity he has performed in over 200 cities in 60 different countries.
